Who We Are

Accelerating Canadian Science Into Global Impact

Image

The David Dolphin Foundation for Innovation & Bioindustry was established to address one of Canada’s most critical challenges: bridging the gap between world-class scientific discovery and industrial-scale impact.

Named in honour of Dr. David Dolphin — Fellow of the Royal Society, Officer of the Order of Canada, and a globally recognized pioneer in drug development and translational chemistry — the Foundation brings scientific breakthroughs closer to real-world application.

We support innovators, startups, and research organizations in transforming breakthrough discoveries into commercial products, industrial capabilities, and sustainable economic growth for Canada.

Leading Canadian Innovation

Dr. David Dolphin

Founder

Dr. David Dolphin is one of Canada’s most celebrated scientists — a Fellow of the Royal Society, an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a world leader in drug development and translational chemistry. His pioneering work spans decades and has shaped the development of photodynamic cancer therapies, porphyrin chemistry, and industrial bioscience.

The Foundation bearing his name reflects his lifelong commitment to ensuring that Canadian scientific excellence does not stop at the laboratory door — but reaches the industries, economies, and lives it was always capable of transforming.

Our Mission & Vision

Mission

We empower Canadian innovators by funding transformative technologies in quantum chemistry, advanced materials, and bioindustrial science — supporting their progress toward manufacturing, commercialization, and the creation of skilled, lasting jobs across Canada.

Vision

A globally recognized Canadian innovation ecosystem in which breakthrough scientific discoveries evolve into thriving industries, driving sustainable economic growth and securing Canada’s place at the forefront of science-led industry.

Funding Innovation at Every Stage

The David Dolphin Foundation funds cutting-edge translational research with the potential to transform Canadian science into globally competitive industries. Our focus is on areas with high potential for technological breakthroughs, sustainable manufacturing, and lasting industrial impact.

Quantum Chemistry & Computational Discovery

We invest in computational approaches and quantum chemistry research that accelerate the discovery of novel molecules, materials, and processes — including quantum simulation, AI-driven molecular design, and predictive chemistry engines. Applications span catalysts, advanced materials, polymers, and energy systems.

Advanced Materials & Next-Generation Platforms

We fund the development of innovative materials with applications across industries, from electronics to biotechnology — including sustainable polymers, high-performance composites, semiconductor and photonic materials, and materials enabling quantum technologies.

Bioindustrial Innovation & Biomanufacturing

We support projects that transform biological insights into industrial solutions — including enzyme engineering, microbial platforms, fermentation and bioprocess scale-up, and sustainable feedstock-to-product systems that enable scalable, responsible production.

Industrial Translation & Manufacturing Pathways

We fund initiatives that bridge the gap between research and industry — advancing scale-up, commercialization, and manufacturing readiness so that scientific discoveries can become market-ready solutions. Funded projects must demonstrate potential for pilot-scale readiness within three to five years, alongside the creation of Canadian manufacturing capacity and high-skill employment.

The Full Innovation Journey

The David Dolphin Foundation drives Canadian innovation by providing strategic funding, fostering industry partnerships, and raising the visibility of emerging technologies. Our approach ensures that high-potential discoveries move efficiently from research bench to industrial and commercial impact.

The Full Innovation Journey

Catalytic Funding for High-Impact Research

We fund transformative research with the potential for major scientific and industrial breakthroughs — prioritizing work that others overlook because it is too early, too bold, or too interdisciplinary.

Industry and Translational Partnerships

We foster collaboration between academia, industry, and translational research programs — building the bridges that turn scientific insight into real-world application.

Support for Manufacturing Readiness

We work with researchers and startups to prepare their discoveries for industrial-scale production, providing guidance on feasibility, scalability, and the practical realities of bringing a technology to market.

Visibility for Emerging Canadian Technologies

We actively highlight promising Canadian technologies to investors, partners, and the global research community — because great science deserves to be seen.

Annual Grant Cycle

The David Dolphin Foundation opens one major grant competition per year, supporting promising scientific and engineering innovation at every stage of development.
